8:30 – 10:00 a.m. Under the Influence, Social Media, Mental Health and Special Education, Karen Haase
- Influences, doom scrollers, clout chasers, and people acting suspicious
- School districts are increasingly asked to intervene in issues that begin on social media.
- School Attorney Karen Haase will review the interaction between social media, mental health, and a school district’s special education obligations.
- She’ll highlight the limits on a school’s ability to regulate off-campus speech, and the eligibility of students with mental health issues under the IDEA and Section 504.
- Karen will also provide practical recommendations for meeting the mental health needs of students while meeting the requirements of federal law, specifically addressing appropriate responses to bullying, harassment, and threats.

- This session will take a step back and look at the forest for attendees feeling lost in the trees.
