ODSS Announces Director of the Year
The Oklahoma Directors of Special Services (ODSS) is pleased to announce Dr. Karen Wilson, Executive Director of Student Services for Mustang Public Schools, as the ODSS Outstanding Director of the Year. Dr. Wilson will be recognized at an awards ceremony during the Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administration (CCOSA) Summer Leadership Conference on June 8, 2021 – June 10, 2021. ODSS makes this award annually to recognize an outstanding administrator of special education making exemplary contributions to promote and further the education of children with disabilities.
Dr. Wilson began her educational career at Mustang Elementary as a kindergarten teacher and has worked for Mustang Public Schools for 34 years. A lifelong learner, she earned her Ph.D. in 2019 from the University of Oklahoma.
“Dr. Wilson’s work reaches beyond students with disabilities,” said Dr. Pam Deering, CCOSA Executive Director. “Among her many contributions throughout her career is helping to create and sustain the Behavior Response and Intervention Navigation (BRAIN) program, which supports Mustang students by providing a safe place to acquire social/emotional skills and strategies instead of suspension. Dr. Wilson is an innovator and leader. We are proud to recognize her as the 2021 ODSS Director of the Year.”
In addition to her other work with the BRAIN program, Dr. Wilson tracked the progress and long-term outcomes of the first cohort of students from the middle school level into the high school setting and wrote her doctoral dissertation on the subject.
“Dr. Wilson exhibits outstanding and innovative leadership toward furthering the education of children with disabilities, not only in Mustang Public Schools, but throughout the State of Oklahoma,” said Mustang Public Schools Superintendent Charles Bradley.
“Dr. Wilson has been a fabulous mentor to special education directors across the state,” said Andrea Kunkel, ODSS Executive Director. “She supports her colleagues by establishing a collegial culture to share information, collaborate and problem-solve.”
