Enid Educator Named Oklahoma Assistant Principal of the Year
Oklahoma City (December 3, 2020) – Jennifer Patterson, Assistant Principal at Waller Middle School, Enid Public Schools, has been named the 2020 Oklahoma Assistant Principal of the Year by the Oklahoma Association of Secondary School Principals (OASSP).
As assistant principal for the past three years at Waller Middle School, Patterson has helped increase student outcomes by embedding trauma-informed strategies, implementing return-to-learn plans for student discipline, and facilitating professional learning communities.
“Mrs. Jennifer Patterson has been an excellent employee at Enid Public School for more than twenty years and is extremely worthy of being named the OASSP Assistant Principal of the Year,” said Dr. Darrell Floyd, superintendent at Enid Public Schools. “She always displays excellent work ethic, cultivates exceptional relationships among staff members and students, sets high academic expectations for all, and always has the students’ best interests at heart.”
One of Patterson’s keys for building positive relationships has been a commitment to encouraging and celebrating diverse cultures. As a former special education teacher and English Language coordinator, Patterson says she has a special place in her heart for the many students and families in her school, including those from second-language communities. Earning the confidence of these special groups, community members now serve alongside teachers on leadership committees within the school.
“Mrs. Patterson is vital to our school culture here at Waller Middle School,” said Robb Mills, Waller Middle School Principal. “She is a constant advocate for students to have a safe learning environment. We could not think of anyone more deserving of this award.”
“What an honor it is to represent Enid Public Schools and Waller Middle School,” said Patterson. “The amazing team at Waller cares for the social emotional and academic success of each student and working with them has been the most rewarding experience of my professional career.”
“At Waller Middle School, our theme is Be the Reason,” she continues. “Students are encouraged to take care of one another and to think of others first. I work to teach restorative practices and teach students how to make amends and to accept responsibility for their actions. When students feel safe, they will explore, they will learn, and they will be willing to make mistakes that help foster growth. When teachers feel safe, they are open to learning new teaching techniques and feel comfortable exploring different approaches through team collaboration.”
“Assistant principals play a pivotal role in leading and supporting schools, and Jennifer Patterson is an excellent example of the hard work, dedication, and creativity that principals across Oklahoma are applying to their work every day,” said Will Parker, OASSP executive director. “We are proud to recognize her as a role model for her school community and all Oklahoma school leaders.”
Patterson will be recognized as the Oklahoma Assistant Principal of the Year by the Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administrators (CCOSA) and the Oklahoma Association of Secondary School Principals (OASSP) at the CCOSA Summer Leadership Conference in June 2021. She will also be recognized by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) at the NASSP National Principal Conference in July 2021. She is eligible to become one of three finalists to be named as contenders for the National Assistant Principal of the Year award. A judging panel will choose finalists based on their written applications, data provided and letters of recommendation, according to the National Association for Secondary School Principals.
